AMES, Iowa — With the Big 12 expanding to 16 teams next year, rivalry games like 'Farmageddon' between Iowa State and Kansas State won't always be promised since it's not a protected rivalry within the conference.
Those protected rivalry games are Arizona vs. Arizona State, BYU vs. Utah, Baylor vs. TCU and Kansas vs. Kansas State. But some argue that Iowa State vs. Kansas State should be one, too.
The series dates all the way back to 1917 and has been played every year since. It's the eighth longest uninterrupted active series in FBS college football.
Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell said conference realignment has its upsides, like facing new opponents, but maintaining existing rivalries is also important.
"You're talking to the guy who likes tradition and loves to play in these types of environments and these games. You know, the respect you have for the opponent because you know what they are and what they stand for," Campbell said. "Man, to go win games like that, that's huge. So, man I'm probably more of a traditionalist and love being able to have rivalries and be able to play in big football games that mean a lot to both universities and both alumni groups, and I certainly think a game like this means a lot to our program and I think it means a lot to their program as well."
Iowa State narrowly leads the all-time series 52-50-4, but K-State leads the series in Manhattan 28-22-1.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 25 at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. The game will be aired on Fox.
