DES MOINES, Iowa — The Lincoln Railsplitters softball team will be playing at the Field of Dreams movie site in Dyersville Wednesday at 7 p.m. against Iowa City High.
Many of the players had never actually seen the movie until the day before the game, but the team will also be taking a tour of the movie site.
Head coach Dominic Ellis said their trip to Dyersville is a unique opportunity and a great team bonding experience.
"Once they started playing Major League Baseball games there and then you kind of look into it a little more, you're like, well, they rent this thing out for little leagues and stuff, too," said Ellis. "So, they take advantage of things like that, which is great. That's when I'm like, wait a minute, why can't we play a softball game on it?"
Sophomore second baseman Sofia Gutierrez is especially looking forward to the trip as a longtime baseball fan.
"I've always wanted to go," said Guitierrez. "Actually, it was like, one of my things to do. And I thought it was just so exciting I was going to be able to go."
The game is Wednesday, Jun 12 at 7:00 p.m. Admission is free. If you can't make it out to Dyersville, you can watch the game on the streaming platform GameChanger.
In the past, the Field of Dreams has hosted some of the biggest teams in the country, including a game between the Chicago White Sox and the New York Yankees in 2021. The original match-up between the two major league teams was scheduled for 2020, but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The second edition of the game was a face off between the Chicago Cubs and the Cincinnati Reds that was held on Aug. 11, 2022.
However, the trend did not continue in 2023 due to construction taking place on the facility that was taking place according to the Field's current owner, Frank Thomas.
