MADRID, Iowa — For the first time in over a decade, the Madrid Tigers went undefeated in the regular season. Now they're looking to get their first playoff win since 2020.
"We haven't had this good of a team since 2016," said junior quarterback Preston Wicker. "There's definitely some pressure there but we're just gonna play our game."
Head coach Brock Hinkel was a part of Madrid's last team that went undefeated in the regular season as a player. He said it's been great to see this year's team replicate that success.
"It's awesome to be here at 8-0 right now and not worry too much about what we've done in the past because it's a whole new season now in the playoffs," Hinkel said. "We're really focused on going 1-0 each week and this week it's take care of business against IKM-Manning."
Now that they've entered the postseason, the team knows there's still more work to be done and more to accomplish.
"The town is one hundred percent behind us," senior tight end Jake Leonard said. "We've got a community really ran by football this year so we're looking to make a pretty deep run and show the town what we're about."
Madrid will host IKM-Manning on Friday, Oct. 20 in the first round of the Class A playoffs. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
