'The Prodigy' returns home to defend his title

Gannon Buhr, the No. 1 ranked disc golfer on the Disc Golf Pro Tour, is seeking his fourth tour win of 2024

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Disc Golf Pro Tour's fourth annual Des Moines Challenge gets underway at Pickard Park in Indianola on Friday. As the tour returns to Des Moines, so does Iowan Gannon Buhr.

Buhr, at 19-years old, enters the weekend as the No. 1 ranked played on the tour. So far in 2024, he's won three events, the most of anyone on tour.

The three wins nearly halfway through the season matches his total from all of 2023. One of those wins was Buhr's first win at the Des Moines Challenge.

"To win at home was crazy. I had a fellow Iowan, my friend, Gavin Babcock, on the card as well, and so for us both to play awesome here was so cool last year. We're hoping to repeat that again."

In 2023, Buhr shot -19, winning by three strokes. This year, he expects Pickard to be more challenging.

"We have a couple new holes this year as well, to add to the course, to make it a little more difficult. And so the scores are going to be a little bit worse this year, and that's going to be, I think, a little more exciting."

The Des Moines Challenge starts on Friday goes through Sunday in Indianola.
