Colorado Rockies select Iowa pitcher Brody Brecht as 38th pick in MLB Draft

During his time in Iowa City, Brecht amassed 281 strikeouts in 178 career innings, making him Iowa's single season and career strikeout leader.

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Brody Brecht, a former Iowa Hawkeye, is headed to the Mile High City. 

The Colorado Rockies selected Brecht in Competitive Balance Round A, making him the 38th overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft. Brecht was No. 21 on the MLB's list of top prospects. 

The right-handed pitcher went 4-3 with a 3.33 ERA in 15 starts in 2024. In addition, Brecht ranked fourth in the nation in strikeouts per nine innings (14.71).

Throughout his time at Iowa, Brecht amassed 281 strikeouts in 178 career innings, making him Iowa's single season and career strikeout leader. 

If those stats weren't impressive enough, there's more: The Ankeny native is a former dual-sport athlete who played with the Iowa football team.

Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz issued a statement congratulating Brecht on the accomplishment.

"He is a top-flight athlete from a tremendous family, and we were glad to have him as a part of our football team for two years," Ferentz said. "I am happy for him and confident that he will do great things in the future." 

Brecht is the 30th player drafted under Head Coach Rick Heller, and the highest draft pick under Heller at Iowa. 

The Hawkeyes finished their 2024 season with a 31-23 overall record, ranking fourth in Big Ten regular season standings.
