IOWA CITY, Iowa — Iowa redshirt senior wrestler Nelson Brands announced that his collegiate wrestling career has come to an end.
Brands was one of several wrestlers that were suspended by the NCAA for sports betting.
Brands appealed his suspension, but in a thread on X posted Tuesday night, he shared his appeal was denied by the NCAA, effectively ending his career at Iowa.
In the thread, Brands went on to express his gratitude to the Iowa wrestling program, saying in part, "I am extremely devastated that my career will have to end on this note. I feel I have so much more to give to wrestling. But, I am grateful for the many memories I made wrestling for Uncle Tom, my dad, M, and Telford. They truly run the best program in the country."
Head coach Tom Brands has been very vocal about his frustration with the situation, from the suspensions to the gambling investigation itself.
Brands finished fifth at the NCAA championships last year and ends his career as a Hawkeye with a 37-19 overall record.
