DES MOINES, Iowa — The Super Bowl is still a few days away, but Des Moines restaurants have been ready to go the whole week.
Two Des Moines pizza joints have even created special pizzas for individuals involved with Sunday's big game.
At Gusto Pizza Bar on Ingersoll Avenue, they rebranded one of their specialty pies in honor of Iowa legend, and former Iowa State University quarterback, Brock Purdy.
Deemed the "Purdylicious", a slice of this pizza includes barbecue, buffalo sauce, roasted chicken, mozzarella, blue cheese and red onion. After minutes in the pizza oven, the business finishes it off with a housemade broccoli slaw, for Brock.
"We realized all the hype that was surrounding, you know, Brock Purdy," said Casey Morgan, general manager of Gusto Pizza Bar. "Our ISU-turned-Super Bowl-hopeful. And that's what the buzz was in town. He's kind of a hometown hero."
If you want to try the Purdylicious, or any other pie, Gusto Pizza Bar is taking reservations on Sunday.
But Gusto isn't the only one throwing their hat in the Super Bowl rebrand party. Truman's KC Pizza Tavern has specialty pizzas monthly, but one of their February pies are on a lot of Iowans minds: the "Traylor's Version."
This one has to do with... you guessed it: Taylor Swift and her boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.
This pizza pie has a sweet, cream cheese base with chicken tenders, chunked cheese, waffle chunks, strawberry and pineapple chunks and a pineapple and strawberry drizzle after cooking in their oven, which is set at over 500 degrees.
After the Chiefs clinched the AFC Championship victory over the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, Truman's email inbox started scoring big.
"We were already getting barraged with emails already saying, 'We wanna reserve, we wanna reserve!'" explained managing partner Chris Mendenhall.
In fact, the restaurant on Southeast 6th Street is booked up on Sunday, and has a growing waitlist. They are still doing takeout and online orders on the day of the big game. They are also doing "overflow" viewing and dining at their sister-business, The Iowa Taproom.
