Cardinals QB Joshua Dobbs coming to the Vikings

The Vikings are giving up their 6th-round pick for Dobbs and Arizona's conditional 7th-round pick following the season-ending injury to Kirk Cousins.

MINNEAPOLIS — That didn't take long.

The Minnesota Vikings pulled the trigger just before the NFL trading deadline, picking up Cardinals quarterback Joshua Dobbs.

The Vikings are swapping their 6th-round pick for Dobbs and the Cardinals' conditional 7th-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

The trade news comes just a couple of days after their durable and reliable quarterback Kirk Cousins suffered a season-ending right Achilles tear during the fourth quarter of Sunday's 24-10 win over the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. On Tuesday, the team officially placed Cousins in injured reserve. Before this trade, the only other quarterback on the team's roster - because veteran backup Nick Mullens is on injured reserve - was rookie Jaren Hall.

The fifth-round pick out of BYU finished the Packer game - going 3 of 4 for 23 yards - but also lost a fumble when he was stripped-sacked by Packers' linebacker Preston Smith.

Hall, 25, could still start in Week 9 against the Atlanta Falcons at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, but now the Vikings have another option at quarterback long-term.

Dobbs threw for 1,569 passing yards with eight touchdowns and five interceptions in his eight starts for the Cardinals this season. He has also rushed for three touchdowns and 258 yards - the third-most among quarterbacks this season.

He played college football at Tennessee where he majored in Aerospace Engineering. For two off-seasons he worked as an aerospace engineer with NASA’s Kennedy Space Flight Center. He was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

Besides the Steelers and Cardinals, he has spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars (2019), Cleveland Browns (2022), Detroit Lions (2022) and Tennessee Titans (2022). Minnesota marks his seventh stop in a 7-year career.

On Monday, the Cardinals informed Dobbs that he would not be starting the next game. Arizona is expected to start Clayton Thune or Kyle Murray, who is working his way back from a torn ACL.

In another move before the trade deadline, the Vikings announced the team has traded G Ezra Cleveland to the Jacksonville Jaguars in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. The completion of this trade is pending Cleveland passing a physical exam for that team.

The NFL trade deadline ended at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
