SAINT-DENIS-D'OLÉRON, France — Karissa Schweizer finished her final event at the 2024 Paris Olympics Friday.
The Urbandale native finished ninth in the women's 10,000m final Friday afternoon with a time of 30:51.99, a season best. Her all-time personal best is 30:18:05.
Beatrice Chebet of Kenya won a gold medal with a time of 30:43.25. Nadia Battocletti of Italy and Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands took second and third place respectively.
Despite not medaling in the 10,000m, the trip wasn't a total wash for Schweizer. She finished 10th in the women's 5000m final earlier this week, calling it her "strongest Olympics Finals finish yet" on Instagram.
The 2024 Paris Games marked Schweizer's second trip to the Olympics. She competed in Tokyo in 2021, finishing 11th in the 5000m and 12th in the 10,000m.
However, in 2022, Schweizer sustained a calf and Achilles injury. The runner eventually underwent surgery in fall of 2023 and has been on the road to recovery ever since, making her performance in Paris that much more impressive.
Schweizer went to Dowling High School in West Des Moines before attending the University of Missouri, where she won three national titles.
