DES MOINES, Iowa — Iowans can now store their identification cards on their smartphones, making age-checking processes simpler at participating businesses across the state.
The "Iowa Mobile ID" app is at least two years in the making, with the DOT announcing the project back in 2021.
“Iowa is the first state in the nation to roll out a mobile ID with a large number of businesses across the state capable of accepting the ID. I’m so proud of the DOT and the Department of Revenue’s Alcoholic Beverages Division working together on an innovative solution that provides convenience and added security for Iowans as they use their IDs for a variety of purposes,” Gov. Kim Reynolds said in a statement.
How do I get an Iowa Mobile ID?
To get your own Iowa Mobile ID, head to the Apple or Google Play Store and download the free "Iowa Mobile ID" app.
From there, you will be prompted to choose the type of ID you're getting a mobile version of: identification card or driver license/permit/CDL.
It's important to note that while a mobile ID is accepted at many businesses and institutions across Iowa, it does not replace a physical ID.
Where can I use my Iowa Mobile ID?
TSA accepts the Iowa mobile ID app as a valid identification to proceed at the Des Moines International Airport, along with 27 other airports across the country.
"Present your ID at select TSA checkpoints by tapping your phone or linked device or scanning the app issued QR code. Your photo will be taken by the TSA reader at security to proceed to screening. You must still carry your physical ID as needed," TSA's official website reads.
You can also use your mobile ID at businesses across the state in partnership with the "Iowa ABD Age to Purchase" app from the Alcoholic Beverages Division of the Iowa Department of Revenue to prove your age. You can also use the app as identification at some airports in Iowa.
