What we know about the CrowdStrike outage impact on Iowa so far

Allegiant Air flights were delayed or outright canceled due to the IT malfunction. State of Iowa systems were also impacted, according to the governor's office.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Agencies and state departments across Iowa continue to experience delays and technical issues in the wake of widespread CrowdStrike and Microsoft 365 outages.

Local 5 is compiling a list looking at the latest updates for travel agencies, police and emergency services and other departments across Iowa.

Des Moines International Airport

Long lines and flight delays or cancellations became frequent Friday morning at the Des Moines International Airport. There are at least three canceled flights and seven delayed flights leaving from the DSM Airport as of 9:33 a.m. There are also 10 either canceled or delayed flights scheduled to arrive to the DSM Airport later on Friday.

Friday morning flights leaving the airport on Allegiant Air were canceled in the wake of the outage, Local 5's Meghan MacPherson reported earlier Friday morning.

"We appreciate our customers' patiences and understanding as we work through this issue," Allegiant said in a statement, pointing out that the company will reach out to affected customers "over the next 48 hours."

Traveler Debra Schoonover says the setback at the DSM Airport is heartbreaking.

"We're missing our granddaughters wedding, for what?" Schoonover said.

Delta, United, Southwest and Allegiant Air all had affected flights.

Brian Mulcahy, assistant executive director for the Des Moines Airport Authority, wrote to Local 5 that Allegiant remains the "only airline right now" that appears to be having an issue with their network."

"Allegiant is the only airline right now that appears to be having an issue with their corporate network," he continued. "Passengers need to pay attention to their specific airlines’ app to determine whether or not their flight is delayed."

Allegiant provided a statement on "X" saying their customer care team will email affected customers over the next 48-hours. Travelers who booked with them will have the option to receive a full refund or re-book their flights.

For Debra Schoonover she says the care team did offer her accommodations.

"We're getting a refund when the system comes back up 100 dollar voucher 75 dollar credit," Schoonover, said.

For many people, the total amount of money lost reaches far beyond 100 dollars.

"One-hundred dollars doesn't even cover the money we lost from the other flight and the hotel cost was up to a thousand dollars," Debra Schoonover said.

State agencies

In a news release Friday, Gov. Kim Reynolds said "some state government systems and employee devices have been impacted" but that a temporary fix was implemented around 1 a.m. Friday.

"IT staff are working now to restore all systems and devices and will continue to do so around the clock. It’s anticipated that systems will be fully restored over the weekend," the release says.

The state said later Friday afternoon that the state's "critical IT systems have been restored and servicse to Iowans have resumed as normal."

The Iowa Department of Transportation also confirmed that due to the nationwide outage, its services for driver’s license/ID issuance, vehicle registration/titling, oversize/overweight permitting and International Fuel Tax (IFTA) and Registration (IRP) remain unavailable.

"We are working to restore service as quickly as possible. However, we cannot guarantee all services will be available until the outage is under control and we can restore any necessary connections," the Iowa DOT wrote.

Health agencies, first responders

Earlier on Friday, the Knoxville Police Department announced its phone lines were down.

MercyOne Des Moines Medical center posted on Facebook that "correspondence and patient programs like MyChart and Patient Portal may be delayed."
