630,000 gallons of water flood Lincoln Way after water main break in Ames

A 12" water main break on Lincoln Way and Stanton Avenue happened early Tuesday morning, according to Ames Public Works.

AMES, Iowa β€” Ames residents and Iowa State University students heading home for the holidays had to navigate a river flowing down Lincoln Way near Stanton Avenue Tuesday.

The City of Ames says a 12" water main broke around 2 a.m., sending a rush of 630,000 gallons into the busy street before crews could shut the line off. That much water could fill nearly one Olympic-sized swimming pool.

Eastbound Lincoln Way closed through Campustown while crews worked to repair the road. As of Tuesday evening, the road is still closed. The southbound turning lane onto Stanton Avenue is also closed.

Officials told Local 5 they plan to restore the street, but that may not happen until next week.

πŸš§πŸ’§Ames Public Works crews continue to repair that very large water main break from early AM today on Lincoln Way at Stanton. Eastbound LIncoln Way closed through Campustown. Watch for ice! Southbound turn lane into Stanton is closed. Rusty water is possible in the area or even far away from the break. Run cold taps to clear water. We anticipate LIncoln Way opening back end of day. Use caution! 🚧 πŸ’§
