AMES, Iowa β Ames residents and Iowa State University students heading home for the holidays had to navigate a river flowing down Lincoln Way near Stanton Avenue Tuesday.
The City of Ames says a 12" water main broke around 2 a.m., sending a rush of 630,000 gallons into the busy street before crews could shut the line off. That much water could fill nearly one Olympic-sized swimming pool.
Eastbound Lincoln Way closed through Campustown while crews worked to repair the road. As of Tuesday evening, the road is still closed. The southbound turning lane onto Stanton Avenue is also closed.
Officials told Local 5 they plan to restore the street, but that may not happen until next week.
