Des Moines police identify man killed in Dec. 23 crash

Police say the man killed in the Saturday, Dec. 23 crash was 32-year-old Roberto Eduardo Rodriguez Peterson of Des Moines.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Des Moines police have identified the man killed in a Saturday, Dec. 23 crash as 32-year-old Roberto Eduardo Rodriguez Peterson of Des Moines.

One person is dead and another is hospitalized following a crash in Des Moines Saturday night, police said in a press release. 

Officials responded to reports of a crash at SE 14th Street and Watrous Avenue at around 7:20 p.m. Saturday. 

When they arrived, first responders found a two-vehicle crash south of the intersection.

"The preliminary investigation indicates that a southbound 2009 Chrysler 300 collided with a 2017 Lexus ES350 as it entered the southbound lanes from a business parking lot located on the west side of SE 14th Street," police said in a press release. 

Both drivers were transported to local hospitals. One driver died of their injuries, while the other "remains hospitalized in serious condition." Police have not released the names of the second driver yet.

SE 14th Street was closed between McKinley and Watrous Avenues as of 9:30 p.m. Saturday. 

The crash remains under investigation. This is Des Moines' 20th traffic-related fatality of 2023.
