Des Moines police are investigating a Wednesday night car-pedestrian crash on Douglas Avenue as a hit-and-run, the department said in a tweet.
Officers responded to reports that a car hit a person, resulting in serious injury at the 2800 block of Douglas Avenue on Wednesday evening. Police confirmed with Local 5 on Thursday that 70-year-old Fidel Funez Mendez of Des Moines was arrested in connection to the hit-and-run.
Both the eastbound and westbound lanes of Douglas Avenue were temporarily closed as the traffic unit began investigating the crash.
Both lanes reopened by 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Patrol officers located the vehicle involved in the crash approximately two miles from the scene.
The person injured remains at a local hospital in critical condition.
