Husband and wife killed in Sunday night crash, Des Moines Police Department says

DMPD identified the people killed as 76-year-old Fred Lehman and his wife, 79-year-old Mary Lehman, of Des Moines.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Two people are dead following a Sunday night crash, according to Des Moines police.

The two-vehicle crash happened near the intersection E 27th Street and E University Avenue just before 8 p.m. Sunday. 

Police say the victims were inside a car, turning onto E 27th Street from E University. They say another car, driven by an 18-year-old was going west on E University Ave when it hit the other car. 

DMPD identified the people killed as 76-year-old Fred Lehman and his wife, 79-year-old Mary Lehman, of Des Moines.

Officers believe the 18-year-old driver was speeding before crashing.

Both lanes of E University Avenue were temporarily closed between E 26th and E 28th. Officers tweeted the road has since reopened.

These are the 15th and 16th traffic-related fatalities of 2023.
