Polk County Sheriff's Office releases name of woman killed in Wednesday crash

An investigation into the crash remains ongoing, the sheriff's office announced. Local 5 spoke to several businesses in the area who expressed concerns over safety.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Businesses along NW 2nd Street on the north side of Des Moines are voicing their concerns over the street's lack of sidewalks and light fixtures following a fatal crash Wednesday morning.

"Yeah, there's a lot of people that will zip right down here," said House of Cars LLC owner Jeremy Baird. "It's pretty crazy. They get to flying down through here, that's for sure."

Baird added there was another crash that happened Tuesday by the nearby underpass where a driver "got t-boned."

Bo Tun, who owns Bo's Complete Auto Repair Shop, said there are one or two crashes per month outside his store along the street where the crash happened around 5:30 a.m.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office said a driver allegedly struck a woman in an intersection. The woman was dead once officers reached the scene.

On Thursday, the sheriff's office identified the woman who died as 37-year-old Nyandiet Nathaniel Magang of Ankeny.

Authorities believe the stormy weather and dimly lit road likely led to the accident. Officials also note the driver has cooperated with the investigation so far.

Evidence gathered from the scene of the crash and statements from witnesses indicate the victim "was walking in the travel portion of the roadway" at the time of the crash, according to the sheriff's office.

The vehicle which struck the victim was a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado, which was going southbound on the inside lane of the roadway. The victim entered the "travel portion of the roadway from the center lane" when she was struck, according to the sheriff's office.

An investigation into the accident remains ongoing, the sheriff's office announced Thursday.

Tun is now calling on the city of Des Moines to do something "sure to prevent that many accidents."

"You never want people losing life," Tun said.
