Des Moines Police Department identifies driver killed in Sunday night crash

Police said that the car was driving west on Pine Avenue "at a high rate of speed" when it tried to turn left onto Indianola Avenue but "left the roadway."

DES MOINES, Iowa — A driver was killed Sunday night when his car crashed into a utility pole, Des Moines police said.

The Des Moines Police Department was dispatched to Indianola Avenue and Pine Avenue shortly before 11 p.m. Sunday on a single-vehicle crash. Police said that the car was driving west on Pine Avenue "at a high rate of speed" when it tried to turn left onto Indianola Avenue but it "left the roadway."

The car then crashed into a utility poll before rolling.

The driver, 30-year-old Jonathan Ruiz of West Des Moines, was transported to the hospital where he later died.

The passenger in the car was hospitalized with minor injuries.
