DES MOINES, Iowa — The Iowa Department of Transportation has approved a permit allowing the city of Des Moines to operate automated speed cameras at more than 10 locations.
The permit approves the use of automated traffic enforcement cameras (ATEs) at the following locations:
- 4700 block of Interstate 235 eastbound (fixed camera)
- 4300 block of Ingersoll Avenue, eastbound and westbound
- 2800 block of Southwest 9th Street, northbound and southbound
- 1800 block of Fleur Drive, northbound and southbound
- 300 block of East McKinley Avenue, eastbound and westbound
- 2800 block of Indianola Avenue, eastbound and westbound
- 1700 block of Park Avenue, eastbound and westbound
- 1600 block of East University Avenue, eastbound and westbound
- 2200 block of East 29th Street, northbound and southbound
- 4800 block of Hickman Road, eastbound and westbound
- 1000 block of Southeast 14th Street, northbound and southbound
- 2900 block of 6th Avenue, northbound and southbound
- 3100 block of MLK Jr. Parkway, northbound and southbound
Two locations were not approved by the permit: 9th Street and Grand Avenue, and the 1400 block of Grand Avenue. Des Moines police say speed enforcement in those areas ended at 4 p.m. Monday.
Des Moines police will stop deploying mobile ATEs while signage is installed.
After installation is complete, Des Moines police will notify the public 30 days before enforcement resumes at the approved locations.
Law enforcement are required to have a permit to install and manage ATEs under a bill signed into law this past year by Gov. Kim Reynolds.
Outside of Des Moines on I-235, Iowa DOT allowed 10 other fixed cameras to continue to operate: in Le Claire, Marshalltown, Davenport and Cedar Rapids. It denied 128 fixed cameras across the state, and permits for 66 mobile locations.
Cities that were denied permits for traffic cameras have the option to appeal the DOT's decision.
