DES MOINES, Iowa — The Des Moines Police Department is investigating a Tuesday morning crash after they say a child riding a bike went into the road and was struck by a car.
DMPD says they were dispatched to the 1200 block of Cleveland Avenue around 7:45 a.m. A 12-year-old boy rode his bike off the sidewalk and into the street and was hit by a car.
Officers believe the child may have gone behind a garbage can when entering the road, and the driver was unable to see him. The child wasn't wearing a helmet during the accident, but is expected to be okay.
"He's going to be pretty good in the long run. He's got a broken jaw. He's gonna have a little work done on that. But he was alert and talking to us before he went to the hospital, and his parents told us later that he's going to heal up," said Sgt. Paul Parizek with the Des Moines Police Department.
Parizek also added the driver of the vehicle involved in the crash did nothing to cause it and also stayed on scene to help in the aftermath.
