Party at the pump: Iowa gas prices now decreasing

The statewide average for a gallon of gas has dropped 6 cents since last week.

IOWA, USA — After months of paying more at the pump, gas prices are on the decline in Iowa.

According to GasBuddy and AAA, the average price for a gallon of gas in Iowa is approximately $4.56 as of Thursday, down six cents from the previous week.

Prices vary city by city. AAA says the approximate average prices on July 7 for a gallon of gas based on Iowa metro locations are as follows:

  • Ames: $4.69
  • Cedar Rapids: $4.52
  • Council Bluffs: $4.49
  • Davenport: $4.50
  • Des Moines: $4.47
  • Dubuque: $4.70
  • Iowa City: $4.67
  • Sioux City: $4.62
  • Waterloo: $4.56

While the decrease may come as a relief to some Iowans, prices are still significantly higher than they were at this time last year. A gallon of gas in Iowa cost $2.95 on average just a year ago, GasBuddy notes.

Iowa isn't the only state seeing a downward trend in gas prices. As of Thursday, the national average for a gallon of gas is $4.75, down 11 cents from this time last week.

Gas in Iowa is the 17th-lowest price in America, AAA reports. South Carolina has the cheapest gas at $4.26 and California has the most expensive at $6.18.
