Bus tips over on Highway 163, injuring 4, Iowa Wesleyan University says

The bus was traveling west to Des Moines from Iowa Wesleyan University in Mount Pleasant when the crash occurred.

MITCHELLVILLE, Iowa — Multiple people were injured after a transit bus tipped over on Highway 163, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.

The bus was traveling west to Des Moines from Iowa Wesleyan University in Mount Pleasant to participate in LGBTQ Day on the Hill when the crash occurred.

The bus rolled onto its side just east of Des Moines, but the cause of the crash is unknown.

Iowa State Patrol's Capt. Ryan Evans told Local 5 there were 10 total passengers on the bus, but Iowa Wesleyan said there was a faculty member driving seven students, totaling eight occupants.

Four people were transported to the hospital with minor injuries. As of Wednesday afternoon, all students have been treated and released.

The university shared a statement with Local 5 that reads in part:

"Iowa Wesleyan is grateful that our students and faculty who were involved in a vehicle accident this morning only sustained minor injuries ... We are appreciative of the first responders and medical staff who cared for our students."
