STORY COUNTY, Iowa — One person is dead after a two-vehicle crash on Highway 210 near Maxwell on Wednesday, according to the Iowa State Patrol.
51-year-old Duane Sievert of Maxwell was traveling east on Highway 210 around 9:40 p.m. Wednesday when he was rear-ended by a vehicle traveling at approximately 130 mph.
The crash sent both cars off the road into a ditch, where Sievert's car burst into flames, court documents show.
Sievert was unable to escape the car and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the car that hit Sievert's vehicle is charged with:
- Homicide by Vehicle — Reckless Driving
- Eluding — Injury, OWI, Drugs or Participate in Felony
- Eluding — Speed Over 25 Over Limit
- Speeding Over 55 Zone
- Driving on Wrong Side of Two Way Highway
- Unsafe Passing
- Fail to Obey Stop Sign and Yield Right of Way
- Interference with Official Acts
The suspect was allegedly traveling at 93 mph in a 55 mph zone on Highway 69 north of Alleman when a state trooper attempted to initiate a traffic stop, according to a criminal complaint.
The suspect did not stop and instead "continued to drive in a reckless manner, crossing the center line, making bad passes, failing to stop at a sign and continuing at unsafe speeds", the criminal complaint says.
From there, the suspect continued east on Highway 210, traveling at a speed of up to 130 mph when he hit Sievert's vehicle.
No injuries were reported for the suspect on the crash report; however, the suspect was taken to Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames for an evaluation.
Law enforcement obtained a blood sample from the suspect and will use it to determine the suspect's blood alcohol content at the time of the crash.
This is an ongoing investigation.
