IOWA, USA — One person is dead following a multi-vehicle crash on westbound Interstate 80 on Monday morning, Sgt. Alex Dinkla with Iowa State Patrol told Local 5.
At approximately 7:35 a.m., a Chevy truck experienced "a mechanical error" on its front left tire, according to ISP, causing the vehicle to strike cable barriers near mile marker 187, about 20 miles east of the Newton exit.
After impact, the truck was pushed back into traffic. Two oncoming semi-trucks attempted to slow down and avoid a collision.
A third semi failed to slow down and struck the rear end of one of the first two semis. The driver of the third semi was pronounced dead at the scene.
A passenger in the second semi is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, ISP said. An additional vehicle, a Ford truck, was also involved and had minor damage.
Following the accident, Iowa State Patrol established a detour route to keep traffic moving.
As of around noon on Monday, the interstate is open to all vehicles.
