3 injured in crash near Albia after car crashes into pond, Iowa State Patrol says

The driver was attempting to elude officers when he drove through a field before splashing into a pond.

MONROE COUNTY, Iowa — Three people are injured and one person is in custody after a car crashed into a pond while eluding law enforcement Thursday, according to an Iowa State Patrol crash report.

Court documents indicate an Iowa State Patrol trooper was on patrol when he saw a pickup truck speeding east on Highway 34, west of 684th Avenue, at around 8:05 p.m. Thursday.

The driver of the pickup truck, 21-year-old Trevor Gundrum of Eddyville, was allegedly traveling 66 mph in a 55 mph speed zone. In addition, the truck had a loud exhaust, a non-functioning brake light and no registration plates.

When the trooper attempted to conduct a traffic stop, Gundrum kept driving, leading the trooper down Highway 34 and onto "multiple gravel roads", at times exceeding the speed limit by 25 mph.

During the pursuit, Gundrum drove his truck off the road while traveling west on 695th Avenue. The truck traveled into a ditch, struck a fence and continued into a nearby field, causing approximately $4,000 in damage, Iowa State Patrol says.

Eventually, Gundrum crashed the truck into a pond. He and two passengers were able to escape the truck and swim to the bank of the pond, the crash report said.

The trooper performed CPR on one of the passengers, a 17-year-old boy. The passenger was then airlifted to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. The other passenger was released.

Gundrum was taken into custody and transported to Monroe County Jail. He is charged with eluding and second-degree criminal mischief.
