'High rate of speed' may have contributed to fatal crash, sheriff's office says

The victim lost control of his car which collided with a tree and ended up on its roof.

ALTOONA, Iowa — A man is dead after a single-car crash Monday morning in which he lost control of his car, the Polk County Sheriff's Office reported.

According to the sheriff's office, the man was traveling south near the 6300 block of NE 46th Street when he lost control, entered the ditch and hit a tree, with the car rolling before coming to a stop on its roof.

The sheriff's office received a call for the crash shortly after 10 a.m. Monday and when deputies arrived, the victim, identified as 34-year-old Brock Anthony Pope of Bondurant, was pronounced dead on scene.

Evidence found at the scene as well as eyewitness accounts indicated that a high rate of speed may have contributed to the crash.

The victim has been identified, but the sheriff's office said that the name will not be released until family has been properly notified.

The accident remains under investigation.
