MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa — Marshalltown has its eye on drivers with a new tool meant to slow people down.
The city installed two new speed cameras in May to observe drivers speed. One camera is located on Lincoln Way near Orchard Lane, and the other is at Governor Road near Benjamin Drive.
But up until last Thursday, anyone speeding over the 30 mph posted speed limit were just given written warnings.
Since last Thursday, Marshalltown police have issued more than 450 citations to speeding drivers, with 84 of those including hefty fines attached.
What do these fines cost drivers? Well, let's just say you'll have to pay a pretty penny.
Drivers caught speeding 11-20 mph over the speed limit will have to pay $100. The fines reach $400 if the cameras catch you speeding 30 mph over the posted limit.
People living right next to the cameras say they have seen firsthand the drivers who still speed on their streets.
"There's some people that you can tell it makes them upset, because they'll intentionally speed up," said resident Betsy Harris.
Another resident, Carol Geil, said: "I think it's just the locals who know it's there that are going slower. I think people who are coming in from out of town... are probably the people who are going to pay the price."
And Carol's husband, Jeremy Park admits that people "are driving much slower, but I think that if the camera wasn't there, maybe they wouldn't be as much."
But until then, Iowan drivers going through Marshalltown will have to get used to this enforced speed limit, and the two cameras monitoring your vehicle.
