Head-on collision near Newton kills man and injures other

The now dead driver reportedly veered into the opposite lane for an unknown reason.

JASPER COUNTY, Iowa — The Jasper County Sheriff's Office reported that a head-on collision Wednesday near Newton killed Des Moines native Michael Croy, 41, and minorly injured Monroe native Karl Peters, 62.

At roughly 11:30 a.m. the sheriff's office took the call for the incident which was located at the 5100 block of County Highway S-74 South.

The sheriff's office, Newton police, Jasper County Emergency Paramedics and Jasper County Emergency Management staff responded to the scene of the accident and the highway was closed until around 3 p.m.

Authorities said that Peters was driving south and Croy was driving north when Croy ended up veering into the oncoming lane and colliding with Peters.

It is unknown why Croy's vehicle entered the other lane.

After the collision, Croy's vehicle came to a stop on the roadway while Peters' stopped in the west ditch.

Iowa State Patrol was contacted to assist by providing a Technical Accident Investigator.

Investigation into the accident is said to be ongoing.
