Police say the suspect was "under the influence of cannabis" and driving at least 70 mph in a 40 mph zone.

DES MOINES, Iowa — A 17-year-old has been charged in a fatal December crash on the south side of Des Moines.

On Saturday, Dec. 23, police responded to reports of a crash at SE 14th Street and Watrous Avenue around 7:20 p.m. When they arrived, first responders found a two-vehicle crash south of the intersection.

"The preliminary investigation indicates that a southbound 2009 Chrysler 300 collided with a 2017 Lexus ES350 as it entered the southbound lanes from a business parking lot located on the west side of SE 14th Street," DMPD said at the time.

Police identified the man killed as 32-year-old Roberto Eduardo Rodriguez Peterson of Des Moines. DMPD said Monday that a 17-year-old has been charged with Homicide by Vehicle — OWI and Homicide by Vehicle — Reckless Driving.

"Evidence in this investigation indicates the juvenile was under the influence of cannabis at the time of the crash, and was driving in excess of 70 mph," police said. "The posted roadway speed limit is 40 mph."

The name of the suspect is not being released pending a waiver to adult court.
