MARION COUNTY, Iowa — A road in Marion County is now closed due to a sinkhole located south of Knoxville.
The Marion County Road Department was initially made aware of the sinkhole, located just south of a home at 1776 135th Place, on April 14. At the time, the sinkhole was 30 feet in diameter and 20 feet deep.
Since then, the sinkhole's diameter has increased to approximately 35-40 feet, elongating east and west.
While the sinkhole currently affects the east ditch of 135th Place, the Marion County Road Department deemed it necessary to close the road and notify emergency services.
The cause of the sinkhole is currently unknown.
The county met with other county and state agencies on Wednesday to hopefully mitigate the sinkhole and figure out the cause of the collapse.
