34-year-old woman in 'serious but stable' condition after driving into Runnells pond, officials say

The woman was taken by helicopter to a nearby hospital for treatment, where she is currently in serious but stable condition.

RUNNELLS, Iowa — A 34-year-old woman is in the hospital after driving into a pond in Runnells, according to Pleasant Hill police. 

The woman was driving south on SE 108th Street when she failed to stop at a stop sign at a "T" intersection and drove into a pond straight ahead on Wednesday evening, a Polk County Sheriff's Office representative told Local 5. 

Pleasant Hill police and fire personnel responded to the accident and were able to get the woman out of the water. Later, dive team members verified that no one else was in the vehicle with her.

Two officers were injured during the rescue, with one treated on the scene for hypothermia and another taken to a hospital for hypothermia and a leg injury.

The woman was taken by helicopter to a nearby hospital for treatment, where she is currently in serious but stable condition.

The cause of the accident is still unknown.
