Des Moines International Airport served record-breaking 3 million passengers in 2023

The record-shattering totals were led by a whopping 891,310 American Airlines flights in and out of Des Moines in 2023.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Last year, the Des Moines International Airport saw more people through its gates than ever before.

A total 3,097,006 passengers utilized the airport in 2023, shattering previous records, a Thursday press release from Des Moines Airport Authority claims.

Here's the passenger breakdown per airline:

  • Allegiant: 564,148
  • American: 891,310
  • Delta: 510,949
  • Frontier50,794
  • Southwest: 380,168
  • United: 687,186
  • Charters: 12,451

In December 2023 alone, DSM served a total of 252,219 passengers - which is a 11.7% increase compared to the same month in 2022.

"This achievement is a testament to the airport's commitment to growing air service and its pivotal role in connecting communities," the Thursday announcement reads in part.

Kevin Foley, executive director of the Des Moines Airport Authority, said the achievement is the product of teamwork and a wanderlust population.

"We are thrilled to celebrate this momentous occasion and express our gratitude to the passengers who have chosen Des Moines International Airport as their gateway to the world ... " Foley said. "We remain committed to elevating the travel experience with the terminal expansion and contributing to the growth and prosperity of our region."

Des Moines Airport Authority is celebrating the record with giveaways and a chance to win a $500 flight voucher for the customer's preferred airline. Three winners will be chosen on Thursday, Jan. 11.
