How does the Iowa DOT keep rest areas clean?

With the Thanksgiving holiday coming up amid the pandemic, thousands of people will be visiting rest stops across the state.

An estimated 17 million people use rest stops along Iowa roadways each year, and it is the Iowa Department of Transportation's job to make sure they are clean.

They manage 38 rest areas, and are enhancing cleaning procedures since many people prefer the rest stops to gas stations.

"We try to keep people moving. We're not law enforcement out there we're just trying to keep them clean," said Iowa DOT Rest Area Administrator Steven McMenamin. "And so i think we're pretty well-prepared going into the weekend.""

All people working in the rest areas are required to wear a mask, and there is hand sanitizer available for users of the facility.
