LAMONI, Iowa — An airplane attempting to land in Lamoni before bouncing back up into the air and crashing back to the ground killed two people in July, according to a preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board.
Two people, the pilot and the passenger, were killed.
Dave Paladino, who is from the Omaha area, was killed along with a 15-year-old family member, according to Kevin Paladino, one of Dave's brothers.
The private plane left Millard Airport in Omaha, Nebraska around 6:40 a.m. July 1 before landing at the Creston Municipal Airport an hour later.
"The pilot did not communicate any concerns to [air traffic control]," the report says once the plan headed toward the Lamoni Municipal Airport.
Below is what the NTSB reported on the plane once it reached Lamoni:
Several witnesses observed the airplane fly an approach to runway 36 at LWD. During the landing, the witnesses reported the airplane bounced, and then the engine noise increased. The airplane subsequently veered left and pitched up, then descended and tumbled on the ground into a bean field to the left of the runway. A post-crash fire ensued, during which the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System (CAPS) rocket launched.
The report adds the plane first hit the ground around 75 feet left of the runway with marks on the ground "consistent with propeller strikes" beyond the areas where wingtip debris was left.
The engine was also separated from the fuselage, or plane body.
