DES MOINES, Iowa — It's that time of year again — time to fall back!
Daylight Saving Time officially ends on Sunday, November 5th at 2 a.m.
The time change marks a return to 'standard time' until we spring forward in the second week of March 2024.
Going back to standard time means earlier sunrises briefly, but mostly later sunsets through both November and December.
Here's what this weekend's change will look like in Des Moines:
- Saturday, Nov. 4 sunrise: 7:50 a.m.
- Saturday, Nov. 4 sunset: 6:06 p.m.
- Sunday, Nov. 5 sunrise: 6:51 a.m.
- Sunday, Nov. 5 sunset: 5:05 p.m.
Although a 5:05 p.m. sunset is early, it's actually not the earliest sunset Des Moines will see through the end of the year.
The earliest sunset in the city occurs at 4:45 p.m. from Dec. 2 to Dec. 15.
Past mid-December, the sun will slowly start to set later through the remainder of the winter months.
The shorter daylight leads up to the first day of winter, known as the winter solstice, which falls on Dec. 21 this year.
Whether you're excited for the time change or dreading it, we will indeed set the clocks back one hour.
Your cell phone and other devices with Internet connectivity should automatically change, but you will likely need to manually reset clocks on your appliances or other home electronics.
