Des Moines, but not the one you think, hit with Blizzard Warning

Des Moines, New Mexico's temperatures sit below freezing as the village faces a Blizzard Warning.

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Des Moines metro is no stranger to snow as it routinely faces heavy blizzards and cold every winter.

But as the skies remain clear, with temperatures hovering around 50 degrees, the small village of Des Moines, New Mexico is facing very different conditions a bit closer to what Iowans normally expect at this point in the year.

Des Moines, New Mexico, which has a population of 117 according to the 2020 U.S. Census, is in a Blizzard Warning as of Wednesday with temperatures dipping closer to 25°.

The National Weather Service also said that windspeeds are above 20 mph with windchill clocking around 12°. Visibility near the village is measured at less than a quarter-mile.

Within the next two days, The Weather Channel forecasts the village could see around 5-8" of snow, which is something Iowans probably don't want to be thinking about right now.

Fortunately, warmer temps are in the forecast for the southwestern U.S. Des Moines this weekend, and by this point next week much of the snow could be melted off.

As for the Des Moines more of us are familiar with, our winter forecast remains to be foretold.

SnOMG! It's snowing in Des Moines! (New Mexico)
