FEMA begins surveying flood damage in northwest Iowa

The Federal Emergency Management Agency plans to work with flood victims on a case-by-case basis and talk to people about where funding and services are needed.

CLARKE COUNTY, Iowa — Homeowners, renters and businesses whose property is damaged in five Northwest Iowa counties can now apply for federal assistance provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

As communities begin to cope with the unimaginable happening, many are left wondering what comes next.

FEMA has boots on the ground in Northwest Iowa as it begins to survey the record breaking damage.

"We've seen damage firsthand in Rock Valley, we've seen damage firsthand in Spencer and in other communities, so many people have a very long recovery ahead," said John Mills, FEMA Spokesperson.

Those who have seen flood damage in the counties of Clay, Emmet, Lyon, Plymouth and Sioux are now eligible for federal assistance.

In order to apply, you need your Social Security Number, insurance information, financial information and details of any damage to your property.

"FEMA may be able to provide you with money if you have serious needs, if you've been displaced, if you have serious home repairs," Mills said.

FEMA works with people on a case by case basis and said it can provide flood victims with a wide variety of assistance.

With the help of local emergency management, FEMA has been going to places with hopes of spreading the word as quickly as possible.

"We're going into areas where the power might still be out and where there may be more limited communications available," Mills said.

While FEMA makes its rounds, you don't need to wait for FEMA to come to you. You can apply for FEMA funding by registering online or calling 1-800-621-3362.
