Final snow amounts for central Iowa's first winter storm of the season

Totals of 8-12" were reported throughout central Iowa, and more snow is on the way this week.

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — With the first winter storm of the season in the rearview mirror, we're getting a clear look at just how much snow fel.

The storm dumped heavy snow on the state on Monday night with the most intense rates coming around 5-7 a.m. Tuesday.

The Iowa Department of Transportation says hundreds of plows traversed the state during that timeframe, clearing lanes on highways and interstates as quickly, and often, as possible.

Des Moines received 11.2" of snow total for the winter storm, bringing the total for the season so far to 14.2". This means we're no longer in a snow drought.

Tuesday was also record-breaking for January 9th snow in Des Moines. The airport reported a new daily record of 8.3", which beat the previous record of 7.3", which fell on January 9, 1957.

15" in Iowa City was the highest total reported anywhere in the state.

As of Wednesday morning, many roadways across the state are completely covered in snow, so unnecessary travel is still discouraged.  Another round of snow will develop this afternoon and evening, and then another winter storm is on track for Thursday night and Friday.
