Iowa cities declare snow ordinances, parking bans due to Saturday snow

Ames, Clive and Indianola and more have declared a snow ordinances and parking bans after the Saturday, March 11 snow.

IOWA, USA — If you have errands to run this weekend, get up bright and early Saturday because more snow is on the way. 

The Local 5 Weather team anticipates heavy snow moving west across the state by 11 a.m. Saturday, which could leave drivers dealing with reduced visibility and slick roads. 

The following central Iowa cities instated snow ordinances in response to the inclement weather:

  • Ames
  • Boone
  • Carlisle
  • Clive
  • Des Moines
  • Indianola

Ames

The city of Ames' snow ordinance goes into effect at 4 p.m. Saturday. 

Snow routes are marked by red and white signs, and vehicles must be moved from all other city streets.

The city anticipates the ordinance will continue until noon Sunday, but that could change as ordinances in Ames generally remain in effect until streets are completely plowed and it has stopped snowing.

Boone

Boone's Emergency Snow Ordinance will go into effect at 11 p.m. Sunday for both business and residential.

Residents are asked to remove cars from city roads to make room for snow plows.

Carlisle

The city of Carlisle is enforcing a snow parking ban. The parking ban is expected to remain in effect for 24 hours until snowfall has ceased. 

All cars must be removed from streets and public parking lots.

Clive

The city of Clive announced a snow/ice ordinance Saturday. Public Works and Parks crews are conducting full snow removal on Clive streets. 

The city asks residents to move parked vehicles from city streets at the risk of being ticketed or towed.

Des Moines

The city of Des Moines announced a snow parking ordinance Saturday afternoon. No parking is allowed on residential streets until they are plowed. 

Drake, Carpenter, Sherman Hill and parts of the River Bend Neighborhood residents must park on the even sides of the street from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, March 12.

Indianola

Parking on any public street or alley is prohibited in Indianola during a snow emergency parking ban, which is in effect after two or more inches of snow or ice has fallen. 

It is in effect until further notice.  

West Des Moines

The emergency parking ban in West Des Moines will go into effect at 6 a.m. Thursday and remain in effect until 5 p.m. Friday.

No vehicles can park on West Des Moines city streets during the ordinance. Cars violating the ban could be towed and/or fined $50.

West Des Moines

The emergency parking ban in West Des Moines will go into effect at 10 p.m. Saturday and remain in effect until 5 p.m. Sunday.
