DES MOINES, Iowa — Much of Iowa will experience the first frost and freeze of the fall season overnight Tuesday into early Wednesday.

Temperatures are forecast to drop to the 30s across most of the state, with the chilliest air settling in just before sunrise on Wednesday.

The highest chance of seeing freezing temperatures will be in towns along and north of Highway 30.

Some parts of far northern Iowa may even experience a hard freeze, which is designated by temperatures falling into the upper 20s.

Although seemingly early, it's not unusual to see 30s in late September.

In 2021, Des Moines did not experience fall temperatures in the 30s until Oct. 16.

For northwestern Iowa, the average first frost occurs at the end of September, while central and southern Iowa normally experience fall's first frost in early to mid-October.

According to National Weather Service records, the earliest occurrence of 36°, or frost conditions, in Des Moines was on Sept. 13, 1902.

The earliest freeze, 32°, in Des Moines happened on Sept. 22, 1995.

With frost being a threat this early in the season, it's a good idea to cover any sensitive plants or vegetation, or bring them indoors if possible.

Those prepping for freezing temperatures should consider draining water lines and even disconnecting outdoor water hoses.

And of course, if it's not there already, be sure to snag your windshield scraper before the Wednesday morning commute.

The cool temperatures will linger into Thursday morning as well, when many spots could again drop to the 30s, especially over eastern Iowa.
