How much rain fell overnight in central Iowa? Rainfall totals as of Tuesday morning

The heavy rain prompted a Flash Flood Warning for parts of Cass, Adair and Adams Counties.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Heavy rain moved through central Iowa late Monday night into Tuesday morning, prompting a Flash Flood Warning for parts of Cass, Adair and Adams Counties. This area saw pockets of 2-4" of rain. 

Additional rain is expected Tuesday, but here is a look at some totals across the area as of 7 a.m.:

  • Norwalk: 1.70”
  • Des Moines: 1.35”
  • Atlantic: 0.98”
  • Pella: 0.83”
  • Ankeny: 0.67”
  • Boone: 0.66”
  • Ames: 0.63”
  • Knoxville: 0.63”
  • Perry: 0.61”
  • Algona: 0.59”
  • Audubon: 0.54”
  • Carroll: 0.52”
  • Iowa Falls: 0.50”
  • Marshalltown: 0.38”
  • Fort Dodge: 0.32”
  • Grinnell: 0.30”
  • Clarion: 0.30”
  • Creston: 0.29”
  • Hampton: 0.29”
  • Osceola: 0.24”
  • Chariton: 0.13”

Looking ahead for Tuesday, rain and storms are expected to stretch in a southwest to northeast band across Iowa during the day, becoming more sparse during the midday hours. Later, additional and potentially severe storms could develop between 3 and 9 p.m. 

Storms will exit central Iowa by 10 p.m. Once all the rain has moved out of the area, a majority of rain totals will likely range between 1-3" with some areas seeing up to 5".
