DES MOINES, Iowa — Snow in April isn't all that uncommon, but a massive spring storm dumped several inches of new snowfall this week across central and southern Iowa.
The wet, heavy snow began early on Thursday morning, but really started to accumulate quickly later in the day.
Southern Iowa received the highest snowfall amounts, with many spots receiving over six to eight inches of snow. Parts of Decatur County received a full foot of snow!
In the Des Moines metro, many spots received two to four inches of snow. The airport officially recorded 3.8" of snow, making it the snowiest April day in over a decade.
April is also officially the second-snowiest month of the 2019-2020 winter season.

Thankfully, the roads did not have any major issues because the ground temperatures were still so warm.
Still, the heavy wet snow made for some gorgeous scenery across the state. Many people flocked to their yards and neighborhoods early on Friday to capture photos and videos ahead of the melting.
As the weather pattern starts to shift into more spring-like weather over the next several weeks, it is probably safe to assume that this is the final snowfall for the 2019-2020 winter season.
Still, the weather in Iowa always seems to humble us just a little bit!
