Illinois man dies after attempting to cross floodwaters, Clay County Sheriff's Office says

​The Clay County Sheriff's Office and other agencies were eventually able to recover William Schulze on Tuesday after making several unsuccessful attempts.

SPENCER, Iowa — A man has died as a result of historic flooding in northwestern Iowa, the Clay County Sheriff's Office said in a press release. 

William Schulze of Elburn, Ill. attempted to cross floodwaters in his pick-up truck on 240th Avenue in east Spencer on Saturday. Schulze and his truck were swept away into the Little Sioux River.

A witness told first responders at the scene the truck floated out of sight and disappeared. Officials and volunteers searched the area with boats, eventually finding the truck "in the tree line", according to a press release.

First responders determined Schulze was deceased in the truck, but were unable to perform recovery efforts due to the dangerous situation. 

The Clay County Sheriff's Office and other agencies were eventually able to recover Schultze on Tuesday after making several unsuccessful attempts. 

Officials later learned Schulze was previously reported missing in Illinois.
