Iowans affected by severe weather in April and May have until Friday to apply for FEMA assistance

As of Aug. 7, FEMA has approved more than $61 million in assistance for Iowans impacted by spring severe weather.

ADAIR COUNTY, Iowa — Iowans who were affected by severe weather this past spring have until Friday to apply for FEMA Disaster Assistance.

Homeowners and renters affected by the storms, tornadoes and flooding of April 26-27 and May 20-21 are eligible to apply until Friday, Aug. 23 if they live in one of the following counties:

  • Adair
  • Adams
  • Cedar
  • Clarke
  • Harrison
  • Jasper
  • Mills
  • Montgomery
  • Polk
  • Pottawattamie
  • Ringgold
  • Shelby
  • Story
  • Union

Notably, the deadline applies to residents of Greenfield and surrounding areas who were impacted by the May 21 tornado that killed five people and left a path of destruction in its wake. 

This Friday's deadline does not apply to Iowans who were impacted by flooding in June and July, who have until Oct. 22 to apply for assistance. 

As of Aug. 7, FEMA has approved more than $61 million in assistance for Iowans impacted by spring severe weather. The majority of that funding came in the form of Individual Assistance, helping those affected pay for home repairs or other serious needs.
