DES MOINES, Iowa — Authorities are warning Iowans to drive carefully after they responded to dozens of service calls during the ice storm last night.
Freezing rain hit central and northeast Iowa while the rest of the state was under a Winter Weather Advisory leading to slick roads and dangerous road conditions.
The Iowa State Patrol said it responded to 151 calls for service between 3 p.m. Friday and noon Saturday. Of the calls, 52 were crashes, 44 were for property damage, 99 for motorist assistance and eight were personal injury reports, according to the Iowa State Patrol. No deaths were reported, officials say.
Des Moines remained under a Winter Weather Advisory until noon Saturday.
Between 10 p.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Saturday, Des Moines police responded to 19 vehicle crashes, according to a news release.
Five of the crashes were reported as hit and run crashes, but no injuries were reported.
During the same time period, the Des Moines Fire Department responded to 15 reports of falls.
DMPD is encouraging people who have to travel to take it slow, keep headlights on for visibility, increase their following distance and never drive distracted or impaired.
