Polk County activating extreme temp plan, DART offering free rides to cooling centers

DART is offering free rides to cooling centers Aug. 25-26.

POLK COUNTY, Iowa — As triple-digit heat indices loom in the forecast for Sunday through Tuesday, Polk County has activated its extreme temperature plan.

With this plan, free cooling centers around the metro will be available to anyone looking to take shelter away from the heat.

Alongside the county's plan, Des Moines Area transit (DART) will be offering free rides to the area cooling centers through Wednesday or until the extreme temperature plan is dropped.

DART also has a list of how its bus routes and local cooling centers overlap.

Currently, the extreme temperature plan is scheduled to conclude at 7 a.m. Tuesday Aug. 27.
