DES MOINES, Iowa — It's been a busy severe weather year, and clean up for some homes in Iowa has been constant.
As Local 5 continues to find people impacted by storms across Iowa, the impacts of latest storms on Wednesday begin to show. A southeast Des Moines street is littered with debris from the quick, but powerful storm.
"It's just a big mess, lot of damage," said Jake Gruber, A Des Moines Resident impacted by the storm.
Gruber's family home saw some of the worst damage from Wednesday's storms. The family home that his wife grew up in had a large tree fall right on top of it.
"One branch just about split the house in two," Gruber said.
Tree branches fill the inside of the home, the ceiling is gone, insulation and sheetrock are scattered throughout. The damage has left the family questioning how much can be saved, which seems to be a common story for many people across Iowa that have been impacted by this year's storms.
One tree service says this year has been one for the books.
"I think this year, it's definitely ramping up," said Brandon Wigginton, Owner of Wigginton Tree Service.
With all the severe weather, Wigginton describes this year as 'chaotic,' but overall is grateful he is able to help out.
"As soon as weather strikes, it's phone call after phone call," Wigginton said. "You go into this mode of, 'okay I got to prioritize everything.'"
The tree service has responded to different scenarios this year, from houses and garages damaged, to debris in yards.
"We're trying to prioritize everything just with trees that are on houses or kitchens and what not, it's been crazy, but I'm grateful," Wigginton said.
Des Moines Public Works will have free curbside collection for damaged tree debris on Monday, August 5th.
The same service will also be available through West Des Moines.
