POLK COUNTY, Iowa — Just like in the summer with the heat, the Polk County Extreme Temperature Plan will be available this winter when temperatures are deemed especially unsafe in Polk County.
A list of public buildings around the Des Moines metro and the rest of the county will be made available to help get people out of the cold whenever the plan is enacted.

When cold weather is a factor, the plan will go into effect whenever temps are under 10° windchill for five straight days, 5° windchill for two or more days or 0° windchill for one or more days.
When the plan is in effect, the Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority (DART) also provides free rides to the closest available warming center.
As of the morning of Nov. 29, Polk County has activated its extreme temperature plan until Dec. 4.
