Here's how much snow fell across Iowa on Saturday night

On Saturday, 1-4" of snow fell across Iowa, with the totals heaviest in the southern part of the state.

DES MOINES, Iowa — A pop of light intensity snow arrived Saturday afternoon in southern Iowa and spread northeast across the state.  The snow rates were never really that intense but with a longer duration, stretching into early Sunday morning, meant totals of a few inches in the end. Most of the snow fell into the 1-4" range.

Southern Iowa totals generally trended towards the higher end of that range.  Some of the biggest totals came in either side of US 34.  Murray & Mount Ayr had the highest total at 4.1". Corning, Chariton and Milo followed closely behind.

The metro floated along the 2"+ line.  Officially at Des Moines International, we saw a total of 2.6".  1.9" of that came on Saturday, with the remaining balance on Sunday.  That marks the first measurable snow on the season.  The average first 1" of snow accumulation typically occurs around November 28th.  This marks it pretty close to normal for the first 1"+ snowfall.

Initially, snow melted on pavement but did start to trip up the roads for Saturday evening into the overnight.  By Sunday afternoon, roads are fairing much better, even with a stout wind from the northwest.
