IOWA, USA — Local 5 has issued a Weather Impact Alert for Monday, Aug. 26 and Tuesday, Aug. 27. These alerts help keep you informed of severe weather that will impact you.
A Heat Advisory is in effect from 1-8 p.m. Monday for much of central Iowa.
The Local 5 Weather Team forecasts high temperatures peaking into the mid-to-upper 90s with a heat index approaching 110°. In addition, our meteorologists believe Monday could be the hottest day of the year so far. Be sure to drink lots of water and take plenty of breaks from the heat outside.
Tuesday should cool down a bit for those north of Highway 30, with highs in the 80s. Area in south and southeast Iowa, including Des Moines, will maintain temperatures in the 90s.

Polk County Emergency Management has implemented its Extreme Temperature Plan through Thursday at 7 a.m. Under the plan, dozens of cooling centers are open for use.
Cooling centers provide air-conditioned spaces for Iowans to beat the heat. If you need assistance getting to any of these locations, DART is providing free rides to cooling centers.
