Restaurant news: Malo will stay open after all, but under new ownership

Malo gift cards can be redeemed at the restaurant through April 27, but will not be accepted after that date.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Des Moines foodies can breathe a little easier: Malo isn't closing after all.

The beloved Latin restaurant in downtown Des Moines will remain open after co-owner Todd Millang agreed to purchase the restaurant, Malo announced Tuesday.

Millang will take over management at the end of the week, with April 27 being Malo's final day of service under Orchestrate Hospitality and George Formaro's ownership.

In a Facebook post, the restaurant said in part, "We have appreciated the opportunity to serve our community. We wish the new owners success and look forward to watching them build upon the brand we’ve loved for the past decade."

The most recent announcement comes less than a month after Malo said it would close its doors for good after a decade in the restaurant business. The restaurant did not specify why it planned to close, only that the closing aligns with the end of the restaurant's lease.

Malo gift cards can be redeemed at the restaurant through April 27, but will not be accepted after that date. However, Malo gift cards will still be accepted at participating Orchestrate properties. Find more information here.
